Longitudinal Study on Creative Art Production

In this study, we sought to study the creative process of a professional artist as she creates an art installation. Contemporary neuroscience studies investigating the mind and the brain in relation to creativity has unfortunately been limited to single-session laboratory settings that fail to capture the evolving, highly dynamic, and usually long-term nature of the creative process in naturalist, complex settings. To overcome these limitations, we deployed context-aware, mobile brain-body imaging (MoBI) technology to monitor and record Houston-based multimedia sculptor and installation artist Jo Ann Fleischhauser as she engaged in creative activities in various natural settings over a period of 18 months. Including the artist in the conception and implementation of the experimental protocol, we were able to integrate wearable MoBI technology into the artist’s everyday life while maximizing comfort and ensuring the integrity of her creative activity.
